Kathy Goater has lived and worked in Seattle since 1980. She is married to lawyer Donovan Flora. Her career in Washington began as a prosecutor with the King County Prosecutor's Office where she tried hundreds of cases and developed a reputation as an outstanding trial lawyer. While at the Prosecutor's Office, she concentrated her practice on representing children and adults who had been sexually assaulted and children who had been murdered or were victims of serious abuse. Kathy is a frequent lecturer on trial advocacy and an instructor in the National Institute for Trial Advocacy. She joined Schroeter Goldmark & Bender in 2000 and focuses exclusively on plaintiffs' work.

Kathy's practice concentrates on representing individuals who have been sexually assaulted, children who have been victimized in foster care, individuals who are victims of medical negligence, and workers in class actions whose rights to lawful wages have been violated.

Results


  • $7.4 million class action verdict against IBP, Inc. on behalf of over 800 workers who were required to don, doff, and clean safety equipment without being paid.  Affirmed by U.S. Supreme Court at 546 US 21(2005).

  • $6.2 million jury verdict against the State of Washington Department of Social and Health Services for negligent licensing and monitoring of foster homes on behalf of four children who suffered abuse while in foster care.

  • $4 million settlement against the State of Washington for failure to supervise three children in foster care who were sexually and physically abused by their foster parent.
     
  • $1.5 million settlement of class action against Taco Bell on behalf of workers who were made to work without pay.
  • $1.4 million verdict on behalf of a young man sexually assaulted by his family's landlord.
     
  • $1.4 million verdict on behalf of a young woman sexually assaulted by her step-father.
     
  • $400,000 verdict on behalf of a female firefighter against a local fire district for gender discrimination.
     
  • $310,000 verdict against a school district for failing to protect a child with disabilities from student harassment.
     
  • Verdict on behalf of patient involving breast implants and informed consent.
     
  • Settlement of case involving woman sexually assaulted by bus driver.
