DEPUY HIP IMPLANT RECALL

In August 2010, Johnson & Johnson subsidiary DePuy Orthopaedics issued a recall of its ASR XL Acetabular Hip System and DePuy ASR Hip Resurfacing System, which first came on the market in July 2003.

The failure rate of these metal-on-metal systems has been reported to be as high as 12 percent within five years of implantation. The Food & Drug Administration (FDA) reported that "a small number of patients in which high levels of metal ions in the bloodstream may have caused other types of symptoms or illnesses elsewhere in the body, including effects on the heart, nervous system, and thyroid gland."
